The Dongfeng EQ2081E (previously known as EQ240 "two-and-a-half-tonner") is the 2.5 tonne capacity, six-wheel drive troop/cargo carrier truck developed and built by Dongfeng Motor Corporation (DFM) based at Shiyan, Hubei province. The EQ2081E (EQ240) and its 3.5 toone version EQ2100E (EQ245) are the most popular utility trucks in PLA service, providing transportation of troops, equipment, ammunitions, and supplies for virtually every units of the PLA. These trucks also tow many types of artillery guns and trailers, and are available in various configurations including truck, workshop, and special purpose chassis. The vehicle is also being exported to many foreign customers under the commercial name Dongfeng Aeolus.

During the peak of the Cold War in the early 1970s, China relocated part of the facilities and technicians from the First Automobile Works (FAW) in Changchun, Jilin Province to Shiyan, a rural mountain area in Hubei Province, to build military trucks for the PLA. The newly founded Second Automobile Works later became Dongfeng Motor Corporation, China’s biggest truck manufacturer. The first product of the Second Automobile Works is the Dongfeng EQ240 (now known as EQ2081) 6X6 utility truck, which was intended to replace the ageing Jiefang CA30 in PLA service.

The EQ240 entered service with the PLA in 1975, and was first tested in real combat in the 1979 Sino-Vietnam border conflict. About 1,000 examples of the EQ240 were deployed by the PLA troops during the conflict and their performance was widely praised. By the late 1980s the vehicle became one of the most popular utility trucks fielded by the PLA.

The EQ240 was renamed EQ2081 in the 1990s under the new designation system. Later Dongfeng Motor Corporation introduced the modified EQ2081E variant powered by an improved EQ6100-1B petrol (gasoline) engine. A further improved variant powered by a Cummins 6BT5.9 turbo-charged 5.88 litre, 160hp diesel is known as EQ2082E6D. The truck continues to serve as a primary transportation vehicle in the PLA.
